Incepted through a hands-on workshop with AFC youth and staff, the designs directly reflect the needs and imaginations of the people who would ultimately use the spaces. The salon was designed for beauty and hair treatment and to serve as a celebratory space for identity affirmation. From the workshop, we learned that ownership, expression, and flexibility for all body types were highly important in addition to necessary salon elements such as ample storage, mirrors, and vanity lighting. It became crucial that the salon act as a space for empowering diverse ideas of beauty, centering of queer expression, and as a community resource for sharing, learning, and fun. The sensory room is a therapeutic place for reset, relaxation, and multi-sensorial stimulation. The workshop participants imagined a design that was both calming and joyful, with touches and hints of nature transporting the user to another world. AFC’s neurodivergent clients were at the forefront of the design process when considering the range of textures, lights, and devices present in the room. An inflatable furniture piece fabricated by Pneuhaus functions as seating or as a hugging wrap for users to interact with as they wish. In alignment with MFTA’s mission of providing access to creative material reuse, and CO Adaptive’s commitment to reducing the carbon impact of the building sector, we explored a design process that differs from the norm. Whereas we typically tend to design before searching for how and with what to manifest an idea, working with solely re-used material necessitates an understanding of what is available at the very beginning of the creative process. The final material palette is comprised of donated theater flats, scaffolding posts from a local business, and reclaimed wood and cork from CO Adaptive’s ongoing construction material archive. To anchor the structure and define the studio’s form, we punctured the warehouse’s existing hung ceiling at calibrated moments, and designed an armature for the theater flats to become a curved wall. The resulting intervention creates a private space for the studio artist, with opportunities for flexible use of the panel framing for pinning up or placing works-in-progress and other materials. The flat sides of the panels serve as surfaces or backdrops for public facing exhibitions and workshops. Two of the flats are operable as doors should the artists need to transfer larger items between the spaces, or want to open their studio up for viewers. Cork serves as the material focus for this circular system. Its range of environmental benefits as well as underexplored adaptations produces an opportunity for experimentation in the adaptive reuse of the Red Hook Grain Terminal, primarily on the ground floor as its first point of access. The project reimagines the production and manufacturing of cork products, enables reuse of its byproducts and waste, and deploys a system of cork groundscapes, partitions, and objects as the framework for building a layered community infrastructure that can coexist with manufacturing in NYC. Disabled space re-thinks the positive potentials of a fragmented environment in which soft forms of occlusion allow for individual needs to be met. Simultaneously, the creation of scales of interdependence produces a network of resources that spans the broader community. Over time, the community adorns itself through vestiges from artists who pass through the residency, cultivating a counter-normative archive through shared culture making. “Healing” is not the objective. As the space transmutes, the accumulation of opacities will eventually deteriorate and evolve. New and varied forms of representation and experience are a priority in this project. https://kelvinclee.com/Invisible-Networks INVISIBLE NETWORKS This project honors networks of support—past and present. The New Guinea free Black community that existed on this site just north of Poughkeepsie, NY is memorialized through a transitional housing community and health center for queer, homeless youth of color that serves as an extension of the River Haven Youth Shelter at Hudson River Housing. Formally, the project explores shifting forms of vision through a language of the canopy as transition and roofing. The canopies shift and extend to create moments of indoor-outdoor use. The duality of the memorial and transitional housing function to honor the former, current, and future networks of support for marginalized communities. The dichotomous relationship between the two components of the project acts as a form of potential visibility for youth, while fostering trust and giving them the privacy, care, and sanctuary that they deserve. Notions of the balance between vision and safety are key components of this memorial and sanctuary. In 1956, the Major Deegan Expressway was extended directly through open green space and pedestrian walkways, creating a precarious infrastructural network that remains today. The surrounding community itself has had a difficult relationship to ownership of its land and housing; the South Bronx has been home to many grassroots organizations that have over the past few decades needed to advocate for themselves, particularly the Latinx and Black communities. The project aims to create connections at multiple scales through affordable and collective housing. At an urban scale, the housing collective connects to La Finca Del Sur community garden to expand their footprint, programming, and outreach as well as reconnect pedestrian access across the Major Deegan. At the unit scale, the project eliminates traditional corridors by introducing the joint: a central form of vertical programming and circulation that serves as residential egress while encouraging overlaps of intimate interactions. Through alternative systems of collective land ownership, long-term affordability and stability allows South Bronx residents to connect to their neighborhood. &nbsp; &nbsp; https://kelvinclee.com/Queer-Care-and-The-Kiki Tue, 04 Jan 2022 06:27:43 +0000 Kelvin Cho-Wen Lee https://kelvinclee.com/Queer-Care-and-The-Kiki QUEER CARE AND THE KIKI This project aims to reimagine freedom of expression, belonging and support for Black and Latinx queer people through the lens of ball and kiki culture. The ball scene has long been a haven for those who have been rejected by their families and society, with origins dating back to the Harlem Renaissance. This project’s intervention would inhabit an existing former theater on 146th&nbsp;and Broadway in Hmailton Heights to create a new, dynamic typology of queer care and expression that does not currently coexist in an individual, permanent space. Among arched and circular geometries, curtains operate as the main device for program enclosure and their tracks serve as an infrastructural system that facilitates movement and collaboration. When curtains are pulled closed, programs revolving around queer care consist of voguing dance studios, sex education, healthcare services, mentorship and counseling, and quiet, personal spaces. When the curtains are opened, the interior transforms into a broader gathering space for kikis and balls. Moments of porosity and added circulation created within the existing structure link the internal programming to neighboring spaces and community. A careful balance between visibility and safety is crucial, however, in designing this space when considering the historical and current social contexts of these particular networks of kinship. Or feel like they can do or be whatever they want? Unlike the typically homogenous and herding NYC public school, everyone can find a place for themselves here. This school concept empowers the spaces and children that are typically neglected by creating intentional moments for respite and pause. Through leftover spaces occurring at the building and classroom scales, the school creates opportunities for privacy while maintaining communal transitions and larger spaces for multipurpose use with flexible furniture. Classrooms are organized into groupings by year that surround inner courtyards or auxiliary nooks and terraces. The broader community is able to access external moments of respite on the ground level. [EXCERPTS] [METAL 1] ︎ 1x white powder coated steel item, maybe part of a baby rocker or crib, found discarded ︎ 10’ of wire found on the ground while metal grinding ︎I began with a cut, a slice, with the angle grinder, revealing the object’s innards. What was originally tarnished and the marks I was creating began to speak to each other as the object folded in on itself, appendages dangling but clinging. I take one bend too far and an arm is amputated. What should I do with this escaped piece? Wire is found and the exercise becomes one of weaving, of insertion and the hope for suspension. Where does the body begin and where does it end? Through a four-pronged performance sequence on a stairway in Avery Hall, we sought to explore the possibilities of the body as a representation of physical and relational augmentation, transience, and collectivity. “Entangled Intuitions, Collective Reciprocity” engaged both its participants and viewers, primarily grounded in concepts and influences from Phenomenal Bodies and Queering Bodies theory. The performance was ultimately an experiment in demonstrating and investigating the relationships between a network of intuitions with material and spatial amplification.
